I have a big problem

The second friday in may I planned on taking my family down to kentucky for my cousins wedding. But my mother-in-law found out and decided to yell at my wife for an hour about it (I was sleeping). So now I have to ride the motorcycle down there (saves half the amount for gas at least). Herin lies the problem.

I have to take my oldest son with me and he is only 6. he can touch the pegs on the bike and he holds on HOWEVER, its an 8 hour ride. I plan on going about 5 hours then stopping for the night. I am trying to find the link that was given a while back on those belts so I can strap him to me as I am afraid of him falling asleep. The next thing is I need to get him BETTER gear. He has a Dot approved helmet but I need to get him a leather jacket, pants, and boots. Oh and a pair of better gloves. Where can I go to get this stuff for him that will get it to me BEFORE may 8th? Also I have already printed the directions off of mapquest but in order to take it on the bike I will have to glue magnets to the paper after I laminate it (I own a lamination machine so thats not a problem) but I am worried about having to read while riding, pay attention to the idiots around me, and worry about my son all at once. Is there a cheap battery operated GPS that will work great to remedy the map situation? Just needs to be somethign on the screen that will tell me turn left next exit or whatever. Other than that this ride will SUCK because I have never gone more than an hour straight yet. Though I do have to stop every 90 miles for gas (2 gallon tank and I would rather not wait till the 110 miles I can actually go before switching to reserve).

Thanks for your help and no im not looking for criticism about taking my son only answers to my ?'s. So if you plan on bashing me take it somewhere else not here. Oh and yes I have given my sons rides on the motorcycle many times.

No criticism intended but the kid needs to be strapped into a safety seat in a cage.

I'm all for people of consensual age to ride motorcycles, but children, well, different rules apply. Six years old is not consent age for anything; it's your responsibility to get him to the destination in a safety seat. The state police you pass along the way will have the same opinion.

This ain't about you, it's about the kid, and yeah, it sucks. Sorry to harsh your buzz.

There is no law about having safety seats (booster seats) on motorcycles so again I dont want to hear about bashing as I need answers to my ? so "fudge" off.

A child six years old MUST be restrained in a safety seat. I don't think motorcycles apply.

its state law that they must be in a safety restraint seat until 8 years of age AND 4 ft 9 (so if your 30 and under 4ft 9 you have to be in a booster seat). The law DOES NOT apply to motorcycles in any state because there is no safety belt that isnt the right size for them. What you idiots dont seem to realize is the law was made for CARS AND TRUCKS because a safety belt doesnt PROPERLY wrap around them which can cause great internal injuries because of the SAFETY BELT. There is no safety belt on a motorcycle SO AGAIN IT DOES NOT APPLY TO MOTORCYCLES.

even so a child restraint CAN BE the belt that someone was talking about on here and I still cant find.

If you have a gps already, this is what I use on my car unit. It works pretty well from what i've done with it. Although I haven't ridden through the rain with it yet.

if you don't have a gps, I think you're going to be hard pressed to find one under $100...even then, the quality is going to be a bit shady i think.

As for the kid, maybe you could use a harness like what mothers use to carry babies on their back. I'm sure they make larger ones...in fact, i see what appears to be five year olds with harnesses and leashes attached to them. Maybe you could get one of those and use a ratchet strap and bungie cords to strap him to your back. Just a suggestion.

pretty snazzy. I can prob borrow my in-laws GPS.

just fold the map up and put it in your pocket...your have to stop every 90 anyway...should be able to remember that much.

he is legal through indy with a helmet...but he should have better gear.
As for worrying about him sleeping while that tie off thing will work...talk to him a lot and take long leg stratches when you get gas. maybe stop more than every 90 miles just because an hour and a half is a long time for a six year old.

true stop every 50 miles and stretch. good point. I was thinking about that with a map but putting it in a plastic baggie in case it rains. The gear is exactly what I am more worried is gear for him.
