The starter automatically goes on when u turn the key to on like you are holding the start button but realy are not. anyone have this happen before? If so what causes it?

Could be a short in the starter button's circuit, or a stuck starter solenoid.

HI.
New member here.
Did you ever find the problem with your bike. I am working on a 2003 1500 LC and the ECM was defective when the same thing happened. I am still having issues with the 03. Just wondering if you know what caused it.
Thanks.

intruder 1500 starter engages as soon as you turn key to on

Hello just needed a few more facts before the tbl can be diagnosed ..first question is does the bike start and the starter disengage and run normally or does it continue to crank after it starts? prompting you to turn off the key to save the solenoid? If the starter continues to crank you will need to open the wiring harness at the handle bar unless the starter wires can be seen if so cut the ground wire..maybe the wire not red (hot) ex: if red and white cut the white wire then try turning on the key if the starter does nothing the tbl is most likely a shorted switch. I have seen bikes with a flip switch wired in for the starter if you want to try this cheap fix this cut wire would be the wire to connect thru a flip switch on a non conductive spot in case it carries electricity or get a new or used starter switch installed. on the other hand if the open wire does not stop the tbl then it's further down the circuit maybe the starter solenoid or wiring need checked or if you have a starter relay it could be shorted, to check that, just remove the relay and see if the tbl goes away, no guarantees that there may not be multiple problems..so try finding a flow chart in a repair book to help out ...someone may be selling one on the internet ...good luck.

The bike did start properly and then the starter engaged by itself. Once that happened, the starter will engage as soon as you turn the key with the kill switch to Run. Here is the original post on the LC/C-90 forum if you want to take a look at it.

The electrical wiring diagram is here if you would like to take a look at it also. http://www.mambaville.com/ForumFAQ/LCSe ... /10-15.htm
Thanks for your reply. :)

so.........just yank a wire off the start solenoid so it CANNOT engage when power is applied, then turn the key on. If the starter turns over you know you have a stuck starter solenoid. If it doesn't, then you have a bum switch, contacts melted together. Hopefully there is a relay in the circuit for the starter solenoid, thats an easy fix.

If pulling a wire off the starter solenoid does NOT cure your problem, then you might also have more of an issue at hand. While the switch could have been faulty, you might need to look into why it did. A poor connection, lose wire, bad ground, any of those in that circuit would cause excess current to pass through the switch contacts. Something they were not designed to do... Food for though. ~Gavin

Thanks for your reply, Gavin.
The starter is controlled by the ECM on these bikes and with today's technology, on many other bikes.
I did inspect, cleaned and lubed all the switches on this M/C.
I did find the problem with this bike. The culprit was the side stand/signal relay. The previous owner butchered the wires coming from both switch housings. The left side was the worst. When I did discover the rats nest, some wires from the signal light switch and the feed for the horn were bare and most likely touching each other causing voltage to be feed to the SS relay. The ignition feed happens to go thru the same relay. Once I replaced the relay, all was good and still good as of today.
Much oblige for you response.
Ride safe. :)
