What are chicken strips?

My budy gives my crud about these all the time. His R1 tires have no area he doesn't use during a turn. I have about 3/4 of an inch on the very side of the tire that still has the shiney stuff...Is this a chicken strip...If so, does any cruiser ever get rid of them? I lean my bike fairly far into turns, I just can't see going all the way the the edge...

chicken strip is;
The section of tyre that does not come in contact with the road, thus its usually a different colour and is quite visable to those who care.
Some numpties, think that unless you use all your tyre, ie. peg scrapping stuff on both sides, you are a waste of space.
I think, that you just ride the way you ride and enjoy, and let the heroes keep thinking that they have the fun market cornered

there isn't any importance...other than bragging rights...and as most of us adults know...bragging rights on a bike lead to a box.
All that matters is that you ride within your skill level....learn as much as you can to expand that....and have a hell of a good time....just tell your buddy you are saving that part of the tire for later.

Nice, thats what I figure. I don't ever lean too far unless I have too...THe roads around San Diego are covered with oil and some spots have loose gravel. I have had the rear end get loose and I didn't enjoy the experiance...

I am just curious, your buddy who gave you a hard time about chicken strips, how many times has he laid his bike down? I would assume that the less chicken strips one has the more scratches from the road they have also.

That's a poor assumption to have: lean angle isn't necessarily an indicator of cornering speed. You can lean the wrong way in a corner and get the bike waaaaay over and scrub in the sides of tires at low speeds. No need to "hang out there" and take huge risks.
I hear clean parking lots are great for it.
