somehow managing to forget to turn the fuel knob to on, or stalling out behind a cop car on a red light, then getting nervous and hitting the horn rather than the start.

That's pretty funny. Yeah, sometimes riding a motorcycle is like a one man three stooges act lol
The good news is most of us have done those same things. The bad news? Most of us do them one a time. Wait, maybe that's good news too, you got them out of the way in one go.

hehehehhe
I could imagine myself doing something like that soon enough.
I once; whilst riding rather to close to the car in front, spotted a car sitting on the opposite side of the road with a speed camera in it taking pictures of the traffic in both directions.
As soon as I worked out what he was, I took my throttle hand off the bar and waved my arm at him with my middle finger raised in a "go puck ya self " motion. The car in front of me heavily braked (one of Murphys Laws would apply here) I quickly got my hand back to the bar and grabbed massive amounts of front, total wheel lock up, had the bars crossed up, when the tyre bit, it catapulted me over the gutter onto the foot path, stopping an inch from the front fence of a house facing the house.
I looked at the guy in the car with the speed camera and he was sitting there clapping me with a big smile.
I am an idiot !!!!!!!

honking the horn at the cop - gotta take that one right there.
Don't worry, gives you things to laugh at later with some good stories to tell at bbqs. All part of learning.
btw, what's your name mean, ichijou? ichi = 1, ju = 10

not a bike story but this thread made me think of it.. My old girlfriend was pulled over doing 97 in a 55, she was so nervous that instead of parking she put it into reverse and did not realize she was rolling i was yelling at her and.. bam... she rolled into the cop car....

buahaha. did the cop do anything?
One way to help you remember the side the kill switch/starter button are on: It's the same hand you'd use to start or shut off a car!

thankfully i escaped a beating, i figured the cops knew i was a newbie as i was staying in first gear the whole time, in fact the cop car was behind me at first then decided i was worth passing.
on that note, and since i'm here, is there any thing wrong with running high in first gear as long as you don't hit red on the tachometer, wrong as in engine damage that is.

We're not laughing at you, just with you. We've all done embarrassing things on the bike.
Someday I might even admit how I once rode for 2 hours with my blinker on...

You know it is bad when you have to replace your blinker bulbs before your headlight bulb...
Sometimes I think the wind is the hardest thing about riding, other times, I know it is my problem with turning the darned ratted blinker off.
I haven't gone two hours yet, but give it time and I'm sure I will.
