Final Drive Clunking

#1 Unread post by bamabadboy75 »

My 05 VTX 1300R has a bad clunking when I accellerate or decelerate. I measured the distance on the floor (rear wheel) from where it engages while in gear from end to end and got three and a half inches of travel (free play). Any diagnosis and repair advice is appreciated.

Sound like a u joint. Not sure about Honda but w/BMW you must replace driveshaft. $400+ (parts not labor) and they last about 200K with a swing arm 40K if you have a paralever. (does it clunk if in neutral when you move wheel while on center stand?)

No, there's no clunking when it's in neutral. My dealer says it's normal to have some backlash or play in the 1300s. Also, I sat on a new one, put it in gear and moved it back and forth and it has about the same movement as mine. So, I guess maybe it's not a problem after all.
