Indicator light not working...1982 CM450A

Okay, I posted this under the Honda index, but I thought that I would also post it here...I hope that you don't mind...

So, I have my first bike, a 1982 CM450A. LOVE IT!! I bought it used (16K miles), but it is an 8.5 on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being best. It has scuffs, scratches, and a very small dent ot two...but I LOVE IT!!!!

Anyway, I have taken a few rides on it, and I noticed that the low gear light does not come on when in low gear, even though neutral and high indicators do light when in those gears. I figured out how to remove the entire unit from the mounting bracket (three bolts on the bottom), but after that, I dared not go further.

Do I have to replace the entire unit just to have a working 'low' indicator light, or is it possible that it is just the bulb, and is there is a way a newbie like me (although mechanically inclined) can change it?

Any input would be GREATLY appreciated!

My guess would be that your issue is down in the trans. I've got an 84 CB450SC and my neutral light only works when it feels like and the highbeam indicator died about a month ago. I think that one might just be the bulb though.

Jiggle the wires that go into the dash, might just be a loose connection. If the dash is like mine, you can just remove the cover and slip in a new bulb.

HA! It turned out to be the bulb. I got impatient, opened up the unit from the back, traced the wires to the correct bulb, and pulled the old bulb. It was BLACK. A quick run to Auto Zone and back (they actually had the correct bulb!! Who would've thought?), and presto! We are in business!!

I feel empowered!
