NEWB rear brake question

My rear brake on my 1979 Honda CX 500 works - but will make a loud squeek noise when I use it - it is not a grinding noise but a high pitched one - I am going to look at it more closely here this weekend but any thoughts as to what it might be or what to check for ? I have a Haynes manual coming and I am of course not a mechanic but want to get familiar with the basics - thanks for any responses

Brakes squeak. Fact of life.

That said, get in there with some brake cleaner and clean it out really well. Putting a little brake lube on the points where the shoes contact the mechanism (don't get any on the friction surface of the pad, or the drum itself) might help as well. You can get a little one-time-use packet of brake lube for about a dollar at the counter of your local auto parts store.

thanks! nm
