Commute Obstacles

And yes, I really slopped it up the on-ramp on that hill. That is the kind of thing that I wonder would have been very bad if I had a large bike.

What camera are you using and how do you have it mounted to your helmet?

It is a little embarrasing...

The camera is a FujiFilm Z20FD. It is relatively small, very light. You can get 8GB SD cards for it. 1.8 or so GB = 1hr 20 minutes.

The battery it comes with lasts 1 hour and 20 minutes. It automatically saves the file appropriately when the camera runs out of power.

Helmet mount is... (embarrassing part) mostly it is just my nose and the face shield of my helmet. I tried following some directions of other people who film while riding, but .... It turned out that a) I didn't need any velcro and b) the velcro I did get wasn't "sticky" enough to do anything.

I was actually thinking of buying enough memory cards and batteries to video my entire SS 1000, if I actually get a chance to do it. So, I've started to buy third party batteries @ $10 a piece and a second memory card. I'll need a lot more batteries and a couple more memory cards to be able to have enough potential recording time to do it.

But I'm probably dreaming about that. Still the purchases are small enough to go under my wife's radar.

That's interesting Id idn't think that camera would be small enough to fit behind your helmet. The POV makes the film that much more exciting.

I've seen the clips on youtube of riders putting the camera in the helmet there behind the visor. While easy, it would hurt if your head gets banged around in an accident. My camera isn't anything near close enough to try behind the visor. I made a cheap camera mount from pieces of things I had laying around the house.

You so don't need a street bike for the commute. I say a dual sport or a tank.

You know, with a dual-sport I could hop up those curbs to avoid getting creamed...

I suspect (but I don't know) that if I get in to an accident with the camera in my helmet the visor will pop open and the camera will go flying out. Of course, that reduces my proctection should something penetrate that area toward my face.

The biggest safety issue I have with riding with a camera in there is that I have to make an effort to look at my speedo and tach - can't just shift my eyes down to look at them.

But who needs them, anyway, right?

I have been putting thought in to a non-helmet oriented camera mount, but I haven't had the chance to try it out. Not much I can do about the noise factor, though.
