630 to 530 chain conversion

I have a 1979 Suzuki GS 750L with the original chain and sprokets, and they are in need of replacement. It has a 630 chain. I was looking for replacement sprockets and came across a 630 to 530 chain conversion. Is there any advantage to changing to a smaller chain? What is the reason for the conversion?

Chains today are far superior to those from 20-30 years ago. 530-series chains are the most common size in use today so the availability is one plus to converting to that size. Another benefit is due to the fact that there is less reciprocating mass with a 530, as opposed to a 630. Lower reciprocating mass reduces the flywheel and gyroscopic effects, theoretically giving you crisper throttle response and better steering response during quick turning maneuvers at speed. Some racer-types are even switching from 530 to 520 for the same reasons, but I doubt the average rider could tell much difference either way.

So would I be wise to make the conversion, or should I stick with the 630?

Are you certain you can get the correct size sprockets to fit your GS? What's the difference in price? Who's the manufacturer, and do they make high quality products? Are the sprockets composed of hardened steel instead of weaker aluminum alloy? These are some of the questions I guess I'd ask before making up my mind.
Is it a wise idea? I can't say... I'd probably just go with the 630 if it was mine and the price was comparable. I guess I prefer to leave a bike as stock as I can, but that's just me.

Thanks, I was kind of thinking the same thing, just confirmed it in my mind to stay stock.
