A helmet for my gigantic melon!

#1 Unread post by monkeywright »

So I'm a week away from starting the MSF course, excited as can be, and I couldn't resist popping into a local dealership to see how difficult it will be to find a helmet for my horribly oversized skull (I wear an 8 1/4 hat - maybe bigger, I dunno. I have an 8 1/8 and it's too tight...)

I've been to a couple of dealerships to give their lids a try, and something was always pinching or crushing, or I couldn't get my head into their XL (I'm looking at YOU Fulmer and Icon), or if I DID get my head in, it felt like my forehead was being squeezed in a plastic vice. Not to mention the beating my ears took getting the damn helmet off.

So today, I tried on a Shoei for kicks, and...it fit like a glove! Well, like a glove designed to protect the head - you know what I mean. Full face, very comfy, I was quite impressed.

Anybody else have a large/odd-shaped head? Any recommendations for those of us just breaking in? I was hoping not to pay Shoei prices, but it's all I can find that fits. I've heard good things about GMax, but can't find a dealer in SoCal that carries them...

I tried on tons of helmets and they all gave me pain in my forehead. The only helmet that fit wasa the Shoei X-11 :|

Exactly! For me it's just the upper right side of my forehead, like someone put a hard plastic chair on my skull and sat down. I was amazed that the Shoei went on so comfortably. For a minute, I almost thought it was too big...

Yup for me it's just the upper left part of my forehead nothing else.

The only thing I could find was the X-11, the Arai Profile was OK too but it felt a bit tight all around so I might've needed to step up a size.

Only one I have found that fits me is a Vega Altura XXXL. Price was right at $89, too.

Some HJC models (e.g. CL15) go up to XXXL. I have "only" a 7 3/4 hat size, and wear XL (CL14) or XXL (FS10) helmets from HJC. Check out HJC.

(of course these helmets make me look like a bobblehead alien, but ya can't have everything..... )

Oh do NOT make the same mistake I did.

Wear that helmet for at least 1/2 an hour and anyone that tries to shoot you a dirty look just ignore them!

with a large head you might be able to find out really good deals on closeouts (cause they always seem to have more of the really small and really BIG helmets available).

What Shoei version fit you well by the way?

The X-Eleven. But it fits me in XL not XXL or XXXXXL

When people get pinching in the forehead it's usually because their head is longer than wider.

So if you drew a line from the back of my head to my forehead that would be longer than if you drew a line between my ears. Probably twice as long almost.
