Buying a 'beater' bike... GS500e

I have a beater car that I use to ride around when I'm not using my MR2. I was hoping to do the same until I can afford to pay for the bike that I want (in cash)- I'm looking for a 98+ VFR. Anyway, I'm thinking of getting a used Purple 1994 Suzuki GS500e (4.5k miles), naked bike, in the mean time. The scooter dealer wants $1644 OTD for it, it just had it's carbs cleaned and has a new battery - Is this a good price for this bike? craigslist has a couple of local ones in similar price range but with running problems or in need of tires (or other parts).

I've yet to own an air cooled bike... is there anything I should know or worry about when it comes to this bike? Can it sit in heavy city traffic without the engine overheating?

I paid $ 1000 for a 95 gs , about 2 yrs ago. It was in decent mechanical/running condition but a bit rough cosmetically - had been dropped, possibly stunted, and didn't have the oem bars.

Seller was asking 1300.

But it's been a very good bike - no problems so far.

I did look at a cherry condition gs 500, '94 with about 7 k miles iirc. That seller wanted $1700. I later regretted not buying it.

Your dealer price may be a bit high, but at least you've got some where to take the bike if you have problems with it. I'd try some haggling first.

If its within your budget. Go for it. Doesn't sound like a bad deal. And buying from a dealer means you have some hope of followup help if any problems arise.
