Bought a 2002 Yamaha R1 today - making the transition

I could've used a few more miles on my suz vol 800, but the season is almost over and I've been really pumped to finally get on a sport bike. This was my real dream. Got it for 4800 cnd and it has 52000 km on it.

I've gotta say, the riding position is totally whack with all my miles being on a cruiser. It hasn't seemed too bad around town thus far, any tips for a guy making the transition?

Umm, not sure how high you've had the revs, but just to warn you, Yammie sportbikes are infamous for having nothing under 7K RPM, so when you hit that, WATCH OUT! If you want to improve the lower end, you can also wire the EXUP valve open, but that also makes the powerband more jumpy...

It's a 2004 volusia with 8500 km on it. I still have it.

As for improving the lower end, I hadn't ridden a sport bike before, so it should be fine for now. I'm not going to race it anytime soon, I'm just cruising around in second around town and it seems plenty fast enough for that.

Sorry no advice on the transition other than make sure you have a strong core so you don't put all your pressure on your hands...I really posted to drool over your bike :mrgreen:

I think I know what you were talking about now when you said look out for 7k. Pretty crazy how it can just shoot like that while already moving.

As for the riding position and using my core, I think I'm getting it on my second day. The first run my wrists were aching and now it seems I'm putting way less weight on them. Still taking it easy going into corners though. I'm mostly concerned about my ability to maintain even throttle through the turn.

I had a similar wrist problem transitioning from my Mean Streak cruiser to my 07 Gixxer.

Best advice for taking the pressure off your forearm? Hug the tank with your knees in combination of strenthening your core and lower back.

Your neck will also get a little bit more strain from looking up. Invest in a good quality helmet. They tend to be lighter and will allow you to ride a bit longer.

Make no mistake about it. We got ourselves race replicas. Comfort is near the bottom of the engineering priority list.
