In the New Jersey area I was wondering if anyone has an idea on a rough number of insurance costs for a new motorcyclist. I want to get into it but it will take time, I'm just planning on seeing what all the costs will be first.
Also I'm of the ripe age of 18 so I know that will boost up the price quite a bit. Any help is appreciated.

I guess the best place to start is to think about what kind of bike you plan on riding. Then call around and get a feel for the rates and types of coverages available.

It depends upon your age, gender, the coverage you want, driving history, and the type of bike.
If you are male, under 25, and get a high performance bike, expect the insurance (including medical and comprehensive) to get well over $2,000 - $4,000 per year.

You also need to decide between new bike and old bike - your insurance costs will fluctuate wildly based on that - if you are financing the bike purchase you will be forced to get comprehensive coverage to pay the lender back in case you wreck the bike before it's paid for. If you get a used bike that isn't worth a ton of money you can save a lot on insurance cost.

I cant believe I didn't mention the bike. I'm not really into sport bikes and the Honda Rebel looks quite nice. It would be something I will take a close look at, and since it would be my first I'd try to find used.
As for progessive I tried but they dont offer quotes in my area.

I'm in Kansas, so not sure about costs in NJ, but my wife just bought me my first bike for my birthday a couple of weeks ago. The bike is a 1991 Honda 750 Nighthawk. My 12 month premium was $143 through a Progressive agent (as opposed to the website).

I believe that my insurance includes comprehensive, but I did decline the MIP (or whatever it's called) extra medical coverage.
