I am looking for my first bike. My neighbor said he knew where an older triumph was. He was not sure what it was but said it had the hard plastic saddle bags.

It has about 30,000 miles and is 1800 bucks.

Are triumphs good bikes?

That depends on your definition of a 'good bike'. Where is it located at?

It is local. I have not seen it. He said it was gray and had hard plastic saddle bags. He said he thought it was a 600 or so.

It would be a first bike for me to use to save gas. (I would ride to work 20 miles each way a few days a week.)

I thought that all older (pre-unit) Triumphs were 500s at the most. 650s and 750 were the later ones. The older ones had a far better electric system (mag) than the later "unit" (stator) models. And from what I have seen any pre unit is worth at least $4K. Other than electrics check the springing hub.

How do I check the elctrics and what is the "springing hub"?

I'm betting that he's talking about one of the 70s or early 80s 750s.

I'll try this again, last post got lost in hyper space. You never did say year and model.

The US Thunderbird was a 650 in 1949 but most Triumphs of that period were still 500s.
