are boots really that important for riding around on the road? i'm not going to be bombing hills or doing twisties or anything...so do i really need them? if so, which brands are the most reliable and should they be tight to my foot or a little loose like regular shoes? thanks.

You you like being able to walk on your own two feet? Yes boots are important.
Every sport or activity has gear, wear it. Good boots will keep your feet from getting crushed by the bike if it falls on you. They'll keep your ankles in tact if they get tumbled around. Protect your toes from road or debris. Aside from that, depending on your climate, keep you comfortable.
As for the fit, wear what fits.

Not so tight that they will be buggin' you, and not so loose that they slosh around while you are trying to brake or shift.
I use a pair of heavyduty walking boots that I got at a Good Feet store, which is nice in that they don't hurt when I'm walking around, either. They have laces, and a lot of riders don't care for that, but mine tuck under my jeans and haven't caused me any trouble.

I actually like the support and feel they give your ankles. It may sound weird, but I like the support when handling the stopped weight of the bike. A good none slip sole is essential.

I've been wearing
Converse Tactical Boots for the last three or four years. Good ankle protection, slip resisting soles, and a side zipper for ease of wear. They are also one of the most comfortable boots I've worn in a long time, as good for walking as riding.

Your ankle is considered a bony prominence it would be good to protect them I have a couple, boots too, I like to wear Red Wings and Rivers roads. I prefer to purchase them comfortably snug so when they break in they are formed to my feet. The treads on the Red Wings are great in BAD

weather they do not loose their traction and are oil resistant. (my hubby uses them too). Also depends on the pegs or floorboard of your bike, weather you want a lower or higher heel on your boot.

I should really get a pair of boots. If I had been wearing them when I got hit by a car, I might not have broken my ankle. My ankle got pinned between the car bumper and the bike frame.

Not to sound crass but I'd think after an accident like that you would've already bought the boots
