now that i have the boots part figured out, what kind of pants are recommended for riding on the streets? i'm thinking about the tourmaster quest pants..but i'm not so sure about the sizing..it goes by small medium etc...so does everyone usually wear jeans underneath motorcycle pants? should i get a size bigger than i would wear normally? thanks for all the input.

Actually, I need to buy some riding pants at some point myself. I've been riding in jeans mostly. I think most people wearing chaps are wearing jeans underneath. I don't know about the sportbike riders wearing the fancy supersuits. I've yet to peek underneath any of their leathers.

I wear a pair of the tourmaster pants. I wear mine over jeans, so bought a size bigger than I would normally buy for a pair of pants.

Sorry the list does not show very well, but the order is Pant size followed by waist size range and then inseam.

Depends on when and where you ride. Summer was extra un-fun for me because the pants I have don't offer a removable liner and only minor venting. My pants have a lightly lined liner that I didn't really notice when buying them, I'm sure they'd work in mild winters, summer not so much. . They're all going to be hot once you stop if you're in warm weather, but my next ones will have removable liners to cope with the range of temperatures I tend to ride in.

They'll also have longer zippers. I have to remove my boots before taking off the overpants with my just over the ankle boots. I'm imagining that will just get worse once my mid calf boots get here.

I got Joe Rocket Alter Ego mesh/textile pants. They have removable waterproof liner and removable sections to uncover mesh. Very good and comfortable. I will wear them over jeans unless it's hot when I will wear them over shorts.

Do the Alter Egos end up being waterproof? (Have you had a chance to test 'em out in the rain?)

I did, yesterday for almost 3 hours! They come with a liner which I did not have with me. Even so, they leaked only trough the mesh part. I bet even that would have been a lot drier if I did not take out that textile piece that covers the mesh(the one that is being peeled away in the photo).
They do dry very quick.
I did have my liner in the M2R EVO jacket and I was bone dry!

Depends on the weather where you live, really. I've got a pair of Joe Rocket Phoenix pants, and wear them over jeans. I'm thinking of eventually going for perforated leather, or motoport kevlar mesh. The colder it is, the more options you have.

I have Mesh summer pants from www.motodirect.com I also bought a mesh jacket with zip out quilted liner from them. Good products at great prices. $65 for the Jacket and $45 for the pants.
Next purchase will be winter riding pants. $58

I've a very difficult time finding riding pants because I have a big butt and very short inseam. (I once had a sport medicine doctor tell me I had the torso of someone 6'2" and the legs of someone 5'6"). My solution has been chaps (which I wear when it's cooler than 80 degrees, but don't really fit with my BMW) and Bohn Armored Pants, which go under jeans.
