I use blumagic. It's a tub of metal polish that cost me $8 canadian at Canadian tire. It takes a lot of elbow grease, but once you get the rubber off you can literally polish your pipes to a mirror shine. I've got pictures somewhere of me and the camera reflected in the pipes.

Won't steel wool scratch the chrome off the pipes as well?

no it wont scratch chrome.it will however destroy plastic pieces that are chrome plated because it is aluminum plating instead of chrome.

The concourse bike guys may cringe at this, but I use use 0000 steel wool sometimes. But if there is big stuff on there I save a lot of time by using a new, clean razor blade at an angle to get the big chunks off and then I steel wool to gte it shiny again before I polish the pipes. Steel wool is good but it takes a long time if there's a lot of stuff on there like when i put my cover on with the pipes too hot.

the ever infamous melted boot. I just use some eagle one metal cleaner. it's in a silver can and you can buy it at any auto zone or advanced for about 10$
