turn signal issue

i got some new turn signals all around for my 81 yamaha xj650 and the old ones had 3 wires and the new ones have 2 wires ... i assume this is because the new ones dont work as running lights .. but my problem is that when i hit the turn signal switch the turn signals ligt up but dont blink .. i have changed the relay and still no blink ... any help?

what do you mean by wires? Do you mean filaments?

wires.... as in one is the ground and one is hot that goes to the relay ... but no flash... just on

yes it runs great ... just having a problem getting the turn signals to actually blink ... when i hit the left turn signal switch the left signals light up but dont blink and vice versa the right side ... no blink

Ya you have your power wire connected to the running lights. Need to switch the wire over to the signal light wire. Put a meter on the wires left over from your conversion. Turn on the signal lights and see which one blinks. Thats the one ya want. Easy to do when going from 3 wire connection to a 2 wire connection.

If all of the signals are not hooked up they will not blink. The flasher unit does not kick on untill there is a complete circut. For example you have to have, for the left side, both signals and the turn signal indicator hooked up to make them flash. Plus both signals have to work. The three wires mean one is ground, usually black. One consistant hot for running lights, usually the striped wire. One flasher hot, usually solid wire. You do not need the consistant hot if the signal only has two wires just make sure the wires don't touch ground.
