Chain Discoloration

Hi,
I've been cleaning and lubing my chain every 300 miles. On this current interval (now total mileage is 1200 miles), I noticed red discoloration on the outside of the chain links. My questions is did I not lube up the chain properly last time and the discoloration is from my chain being exposed to air and moisture? I haven't been caught in the rain nor have I encountered any water puddles along my commute.

If the red is only on the outside flat surface of the links, than it is only cosmetic.
If the red is around the o-rings, the chain is failing.
At 1200 miles, it should only be cosmetic.....
So is the red in the o-ring area, or just the flat part of the links

We just got back from a ride and I took another look at my chain. Compared to yesterday's condition, I'd say that today the discoloration is in between the flat plates at the rollers and not as prevalent.
Based on your inquiry, I think I'd better swing by the garage shop sooner than later.

Update on the chain discoloration. . .
After speaking with a couple of the guys at work with many years of riding and maintaining their own bikes, I decided to hold off on taking my bike to the shop. I've been riding every day for the past few days and the discoloration is getting less noticeable. I'm going to change my chain maintenance somewhat by lubing more frequently (as mentioned here at TMW) and not be so heavy handed with the cleaning products.
When it's time for my next major schedule service interval, I'll mention this issue if it continues to persist. After all that I've read, I'm preparing myself for the possibility of the extra expense to have the chain and sprockets replaced.
Well, it's all a learning experience. One of the reasons, I wanted a 250cc was to learn and get hands-on experience in small engine maintenance. Now it's time to get back to enjoying riding again.

Thanks for this tip. I was getting a little concerned about discoloration but I felt that it wasn't something to worry about
