Horrible gas mileage

I'm getting horrible gas mileage (20-25mpg) on my Kawa zr750
I can only go 45-50 miles before hitting reserve. When I fill up i only have to fill it up 2 gallons. The capacity is 4.5 gallons. I should be hitting reserve w/ about .8 gallons left.
i don't know if the two problems are related though.
I have a slighly dirty air filter that had been soaked in oil but i was able to rinse it out. I have a new filter on the way. Can this cause the problem?
What else should i check?

i get horrible mileage too with my bike. cant remember the exact miles but its bad. mine has a stage 1 jet kit ive herd that pretty much kills mileage but im not sure. i might have to check my air filter if that can be a problem too.

i had a stage 1 jet kit in my 1982 honda vf750s sabre and it cut the gas mileage from 41mpg to 30mpg.i removed that mess and threw it in the garbage where it belongs and went back stock with size 40 slow jets and.020 shim under needle.only gain i could see with jet kit was from 7000rpm up.

I may have found the culprit.
my tires were at F: 16PSI and R: 20PSI
when they should be 28psi front and 32 psi rear
I'm not sure why i was hitting reserve after 2 gallons though. could be a venting issue i guess.
any other input?

I presume that your fuel cap is locked at night ? there are a lot of syphon tubes around these days .

someone could just as easily remove the fuel line and turn it to PRI.
well.....the above tire inflation didn't seem to help my mileage at all if any.
I think i rode it about 7-8 miles before i pumped up the tires and changed the airfilter.
so afterwards i was abile to put about 15 miles on it. So I decided to head to the gas station to check how much fuel I've used and I've already used a gallon.
I'll keep experimenting and see the level of my gas. Tire pressure should be when the tire is cold right?

checked out the #4 plug and its fouled up(not wet or oily)
adjusted the idle for that carb
fouled it again
adjusted again
fouled it again.
any other cause for fouling that plug?
and can this be the reason for my bad mileage?
