highway lanes

#1 Unread post by uley »

What lane on a three lane highway do you prefer to ride in? I have heard that riding in the left lane is best since it is harder to get cut off - I know left hand lanes are for passing only but that rule seems to go out the window the minute traffic gets heavier here - just seems to me the left lane is the lane where it is easier to get away from trouble -

There's no best lane position for every situation. You need to exercise your personal judgment to find the right blend of visibility, traction and space cushion.

That said, I find the left lane position is usually the best mix.

I use the blacktop from one side to the other. My taxes paid for it.

I go where the cages are not, and can not go.

Keeping as much distance between them and me as possible

Dude your taxes paid for the right half OK.
People say I'm stupid and apathetic. I don't know what that means, and I don't care.

I will cruise in the left lane only if I am speeding.
Otherwise I tread right, and change to the middle when cars are merging.
Of course highway designs differ and drivers are crazy, so keep an eye on 8 6 and 4 o'clock, and change plans accordingly. Never pass on the right.

In most places using the left lane for passing is not just "a rule," it's a law. I drive like a German--pop into the left lane only long enough to pass, then move back.

Here in the UK the motorways are so congested that it rarely makes any difference. I tend to ride in the right-hand, overtaking lane (equivalent to the left-hand lane in the States) in those circumstances. However, I've read that statistically the "slow" lane is the safest and also often the fastest when traffic is heavy.

When the traffic is flowing freely, I agree with Rock Bottom. I ride legally, only using the outer lanes to overtake. Seeing drivers sitting in the middle lane on an empty road, is one of the few things that really annoys me.

Oops, I misread and thought the OP was talking about lane positions, not which lane.

Lane positions as in A/B/C here:

As for which lane on a three lane highway, keep right except to pass or if you need to move for safety reasons.
