About now would be good. When you're first breaking in an engine you need to get all of the extra pieces out from the manufacturing process.

I have a 250 and my owner’s manual said the first oil change and all around check over should be at 600 miles, then at about 2,500 miles for the next.

+1 on the 600 miles.
A new engine will produce lots of gunk......it's important to get that drained out....oil should be drained while the engine is hot.

+1 on the 600 miles. Break in oil should have been changed. It is not the same oil that you use for the rest of the engine's life.

The oil used on a new bike is the petroleum type not synthetic so it doesn't last as long. This is good for building up a decent amount of heat for the seals to break in and do their job for a long time. Plus when the brand new pistons are being worked there is bound to be some metal shavings in the oil after the break in period which is usually around 5 - 700 miles with 600 being common.

Change the oil and it would be good to get a new filter since the metal shavings will probably be there.
