You'll need to check CA laws. I'm sure you can find their Dept. Of Motor Vehicles online.

DEFINITELY take the MSF BRC course. Look here: http://www.msf-usa.org/

My son, who will be 17 in May, got bit by the bug as I was talking about it. That, and we looked over the fact that even with having to buy the gear, it'll be cheaper to get him a decent used bike & insure that than to do the same for a car.

I made a deal with him. I'd pay for BRC course, and half of any approved safety eqq. Means I did pay half for his helmet already b/c it was one I approved of. Same will go for jacket & pants. :) I'll sign him up for the brc course very shortly as well.

Good luck, and read everything on this board - there are lots of interesting things that can help you.

I'm pretty sure--but not 100%--that in CA you'll have to get a driver's license first (or concurrently.) I do know that when you take your written MC exam, you are also required to take the Class C driver's exam.

Either way, under age 21 riders are required to take the MS safety course ($150.) No way around it if you want to ride legally.
