Cannon or Nikon/sony etc

My camera was stolen along with my textbooks, notebooks and Nightwatch/Daywatch DVD's right out of my jeep.

It was a cannon rebel xsi and my first slr. The insurance is covering it though and now that I get to purchase a camera instead of receiving one for christmas I can choose the brand.

Anything in the price range of the xsi that would be better. Any downsides to cannon? The more I know the happier I'll be. Come on motorcycle forum- show me what you've got!

Absolutely nothing wrong with getting another XSi.

I'd seriously consider a Nikon D60 with the 18-200mm VR first, though.

I have an xsi, and I really like it. I got started with it by buying my (now ex) wife first a film rebel, then a digital rebel.

I really like them. And as I did more & more research, my opinion stayed the same. Nothing wrong with Nikon, although stay away from the bottom end dSLR's on Nikon b/c they lack features.

I really like the Canon 50mm 'cheapie' lens. It's great. I also have the ~$600 70-300IS lens. It's really nice.

Okay, skip the xsi and go for some true (as my daughter calls it,) camera prawn.
Canon 5D mkII

If all the bells and whistles aren't enough, they threw in full 1080p HD movie recording...

If you liked the Canon, get another. If you didn't, get the Nikon D60 or D300.

If shooting JPEGS only, not much difference in cameras

If you are shooting JPEGS only, and that is what most hobbiest camera owners do then any camera body and lens that fits your budget and usable focal length parameters is fine.

I just advised my next door neighbor to buy a waterproof Olympus camera as he wants to use this on his boat and being waterproof is a major plus.

Although I have lots of SLR cameras, I carry a small point and shoot on my bike as I do not want to have to deal with a SLR while riding or even put in in my saddle bags.

I generally shoot RAW, no, not nude  preferring the larger RAW format to the smaller JPEG. Shooting RAW images allow for more post shooting image manipulation (photoshop) and larger images as I support my self selling photographs.

I ended up grabbing a used 30D for next to nothing and throwing some cash into three recommended beginner lenses

Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.8 II Autofocus Lens
Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III Autofocus Lens
Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Image Stabilizer USM Autofocus Lens
