Dumb rider decisions

So . . . I was leaving my house after lunch today in my work van, a 250 Ford. I live on a short stretch of a windy little road, so you can never see far enough to be sure it's REALLY clear. And it's nearly impossible to not cross the center line in this big van as I leave my drive.

I look both ways multiple times, and pull out to the right. As I swing my head back to the right there's a nice cruiser sitting just inside his side of the double yellow. I'm moving maybe 5mph, so I stomp my brakes & let him go by.

If I hadn't been paying attention I'd have probably hit him, and the only gear he had was the state required minimum of a beanie helmet.

I'm not going to condemn his choice of gear - it's his skin & life. But why in heck didn't he move to the far side of the road? He'd have been perfectly safe there even if I closed my eyes!

<sigh>
