Is this a good first bike?

I know this question has been asked a million times about a million different bikes but...

I'm just getting into riding. Haven't taken the MSF course yet but I plan on it. I'm 5'7" and about 210 lbs.

I found someone who is selling a 1983 Honda Nighthawk 550. It has about 13,000 miles. It runs well and I would say it's in "good" to "very good" condition. He is asking $1000.

Is this price reasonable and would this be a good bike to start on?

Sounds like a good choice to me... but I'd have someone look it over and make sure it's actually in "good to very good condition."

Also make sure that you're comfortable when you sit on it.

As long as it runs good I don't see why not. For only $1000 you can't ask for the best bike out there.

Potentially, that could be a great starter. Honda reliability, easy handling, standard riding position and a motor that likes to rev. What's not to like?
Look it over really well, or better yet, take it to an old bike guru and let him check it over. If you find anything not quite right, use it as a bargaining tool!
