whoops, what did I do?

I have an 01 Ducati Monster that was moved across the country ahead of me, and wasn't stored very well over winter. This spring it wasn't running so hot, some surging and backfiring at low speeds. Today I popped the carbs out to clean them out, they didn't look bad but I found several jets that were fairly clogged so I cleaned them out well.
I put it all back together and started it up and it fired up about in about 20 seconds, after the floats refilled and everything. Idled much nicer and seemed to be running well. Then after about 10 seconds of idling it started doing something odd... I heard a little pffft pffft sound and saw something shooting out of the left side of the carbs. I think. It kind of scared me so I shut it right off, I didn't want to risk damage by keeping it running. It was a very rhytmic pulse, maybe once a second or right around there. And accompanied by a vapor shooting out from the left side.
Any thoughts? It seemed to run ok. I was thinking maybe the seal between the carbs and exhaust manifolds wasn't tight, but I can't imagine exhaust gasses would squirt out once a second in almost perfect rhythm. I'm pretty confident everything is tightened down and assembled properly, and the bike was idling fine...
