Total Noob Question

#1 Unread post by TinkTime00 »

So, I'm a total noob when it comes to motorcycles. I've taken and passed an MSF class. And I just bought my first used bike. Yeah!

But one thing has COMPLETELY confused me: What do people do w/ their helmets when they're not riding??? Example: someone runs to the store or takes their bike to the movies or something, do people just carry their helmets around with them? Is there some way to lock them on the bike? HELP!

So far, I haven't had to deal with this yet as most of my beginner rides begin and end at home. But I'm hoping to branch out soon, and this helmet info would be most useful.

Thanks

My bike's got a cavity where the tank usually is (real gas tank is under the seat), so you can lock a helmet to it. Handy.

I carry mine with me. I could fit it into my trunk, if the trunk were empty, or store it in my saddlebags, but I don't keep the bags on the bike since I got the trunk. There is a helmet lock on the bike but I never use it.
People say I'm stupid and apathetic. I don't know what that means, and I don't care.

It depends on the helmet in my opinion. If you have an expensive helmet I'd always carry that around with me. If I have a thrashed helmet I would use my helmet lock on the motorcycle and just leave it with the bike.

If your bike doesn't have a helmet lock, there are aftermarket ones that can be mounted on the bike - lots of different kinds. Google for "motorcycle helmet lock", you'll get lots of hits.

Ok...about helmet locks: Do you just slide the removed lock through the metal rings on the helmet strap, then just reattach the lock to the bike?

I've got a helmet lock on the rear fender. It's not a removable lock. It works on the same key as the ignition. It's got a U-shaped bar that pops out when I turn the key. I put it through the chin strap's metal buckle and close it.

I put mine over my GPS on the bars and run a cable lock through the face opening and out the bottom, connecting it to the handlebards.
