Charging issues on an 83 cb550.

Hope someone out there can help me out with cause I just can't figure this one out.

I had charging issues late last year and thought I had tracked it down to the Regulator / rectifier, so I sent away for a new one.

Just finished setting the bike up for this years season but am still only reaching a maximum of 13 volts from the charging system with the new rectifier installed. I had taken the stator in to a local shop last year and their tests said the stator was ok.

I don't know what to check nexxt. :frusty:

My bike is a 1983 CB550SC Nighthawk

Ideas??

You've checked to make sure the battery itself is good right? A bad battery can upset a charging test

I guess I should have mentioned that.

I purchased a new battery late last year (after finding out that the old one was not getting a proper charge). I have kept it in good condition with a decent charger over the winter so I am pretty sure that's not the issue.

Have you cleaned and serviced all connectors in the charging circuit?

I have cleaned them as best I could. A fine emery board seemed to do the trick but didn't give me any better results. Could it be a bad wire somewhere in the system? I do get consistent results so I don't think that's it but...?

I should mention that the system will build up to 13 volts at around 3000 rpm but does not get any higher than that regardless of the revs.

im not an expert by no means but ive found that even though your stator is still charging the years will take a toll on the magnetic properties of it and will still work but weak and this will kill even a new bat if you make short trips you know alot of starting and stoping
