Lots of firsts for me when it comes to this one; first bike over a liter, first shaft drive, first air-cooled engine, first twin, first bike with weird front suspension. I'm lovin' it all, just the same.

nice lookin' bike. let me know what you think of it, i love BMW cars and am wondering if they were able to convert that same driving enjoyment to motorcycles. nobody i know around here rides a BMW bike so information is somewhat limited.

thanks!

Sweet!

FYI, BMW has been making motorcycles since 1923. They didn't start producing cages until 1928. You might say that their experience in motorcycles made their cages tolerable.

but i've been driving BMW cars since 2000 and have never ridden a BMW bike. had a 93 325i and a 1999 540i sport package. 540i sport package liked to cruise at 130mph, which makes for an expensive ticket so i sold it before i found out how expensive that ticket would be.

oh, and in case anyone is wondering, when BMW says in their owners manual that a car's top speed is 139mph, they mean it. hit 140 in the 325 with a slight tail wind somewhere in nebraska. never did top out the 540 but i have no doubt that it was indeed limited at 155mph. it still pulled nicely at 130 with some accelerator pressure, and that 6th gear in it meant 30+ mpg at 85mph on the freeway out here in AZ.

Isn't that about the same model that LionLady rides?

Congrats on your new ride!

Thanks one and all! It's a heavy mother of a bike, so I think I'm back to parking lots and doing figure 8s most of the time for the next coupla weeks. Low speed stuff is pretty easy though, I guess because the twins keep the weight low and wide.

Well, this is my second Beemer so far; they're kinda quirky, more eccentric than their cars, IMHO. They make a lot of odd engineering choices; flat twins (BMW and Ural are the only mass producers I can think of that use the layout), there's the weird feel of Saxon-Motodd or Hossack forks, plus they don't exactly have the prettiest range of bikes around. All in all, they're definitely an acquired taste, but I admire their . . . stubbornness is the word that comes to mind.

Yup, seems like it's the exact same model, cop colors, asymmetric headlights and all!
