Honda Shadow VT1100 ACE too big for first bike?

I'm 5'7" and about 185. I'm looking at bikes and right now the VT1100 looks to be the best looking and value. I'll get to see the bike in three days. But I wonder if this is too big? I have taken the MSF Basic course, but my riding experience is pretty much limited to that. The other choices are the 600 Shadows or 650 V-Stars. From reading the forum, I'm good with either of those.
Thanks

I would recommend going with the smaller options, especially if the VT1100 is new. There's a good chance that you may drop the bike at low speeds a few times, and you wouldn't want to mess up all that pretty chrome. It'll also be easier to learn and practice low speed riding on a lighter bike.

I started on a v star 1100 and am about your ht. I had very little trouble. When I ride my wifes 650 it feels very small.

Good points. I took the class on the 250 so the 650 would feel much larger. I think I'm going with that. I just found an 06 with low miles that is in really good shape. And then if I want to upgrade, I could keep the 650 for my wife. I just have to sell her on the ride. Any more thoughts are more than welcome. I'm really just trying to take it slow and get as much advice as possible.

That's the best way to do it. Just take your time and don't rush into things and it'll eventually work out. BTW, I rode a VZ800, which isn't much bigger than a 600 shadow. I'm about 6'3", 200 lbs, and I got by fine on that for a year or so. There's always upgrades and it gives you something to look forward to!

If you live where there is little traffic.... if you can resist driving like Marlon Brando or Steve McQueen then go for it. I'm 56 and just bought my bike. I got 400 miles logged so far and live about 30 miles from a city of 50,000. I drive like a grandpa for now.
