I own three helmets. A Schuberth from Germany, a Nolan from Italy, and an Arai from Japan.

I've only been riding a little more than a year. I got the Nolan when I first bought my bike and very quickly jettisoned it (sort of like Italy's experience in WW II). It was way too loud and the lining tended to pull out when I took it off when my head was damp.

I then rode the Schuberth for most of the last year. I liked it and found it fairly quiet, but over the past few months it has started giving me intense ear pain. Best I can figure is that the "in" vent is more effective than the "out" vent, and that built up just enough pressure inside the helmet to bother me.

I just got the Arai (a Quantum II) yesterday. Got a great deal on a clearance model from my dealer. In fact, when the saleslady tried to ring it up her computer told her the price she input was less than the cost of the item, so she had to override that.

Anyhow, I did a short ride with it yesterday (60 miles or so) and was absolutely blown away. It is light enough and so well vented (7 vents!) that if not for the pressure on my cheeks from the pads, I would have thought that I was riding without a helmet. And, to my surprise, it was at least as quiet if not quieter than the Schuberth (which claims to be the quietest). I'd get a tiny bit of vent whistle at high speeds, but nothing unpleasant.

And while I need a long ride for a definitive test, it seems to not cause the ear pain. So I'm happy. Very happy.

I'm very thankful for sharing your valuable experience
I use a cheap Italian helmet right now (Jebs), but it is terribly loud at higher speeds, so I am in a process of hunting for a quiet comfortable helmet
My friend has a Nolan (N84), which he finds comfortable, but it is still rather loud, and the ventilation at lower speeds (in town) is inadequate.
Maybe I should look towards Arai or Schuberth

Unfortunately, Schuberth is not currently selling in the U.S. I guess their market share was so small that it was not profitable to make separate products to meet both U.S. DOT and EU standards.

I really, really loved the Schuberth's flip down sun visor, but overall think the Arai is better made

When I used to bicycle a lot, I only bought high end on three things: helmets, seats, and tires. Being a recreational rider, I figured I could compromise on everything else.

I've sort of continued that with motorcycling. I'll go toward the high end on helmets, but stay away from Vanson or Aerostitch jackets.

My vote goes for Shoei. However, where it was made, I have NO idea.
