Denise, welcome to the forum. Have you taken the MSF course yet? I'm sure there is some kind of training course, there in your area, that will teach you the basics and give you some riding experience in a controlled environment.
People say I'm stupid and apathetic. I don't know what that means, and I don't care.

Take an MSF course in your area, it will help you build confidence and skills.

There is nothing to be afraid of, just remain calm and you'll be fine :)

Go for training , got back on the bike. We all have fear when we ride. I had a bad one 25 years ago but did not give up , just ride smarter now. Only fools have no fear when riding , we read about them in the paper when they die.

I know it scares the crap out of me. I think that it's just because I'm new. I took the course and having the skill set in mind as I ride helps me as I go. Everytime I turn a corner, I think, your bike goes where you look, so I look where I want to go. It's much less scary that way.

I was also told to take an MSF course, so i will be taking it before I get to buy my bike. My mom is still panicking, but what mom wouldn't?

Good luck!

Just keep at it. Other than the MSF & other riders courses only time on the bike will bring back your confidence.

I'm still on about mile 200 on my bfirst bike and I do the gear thing pike you too. I have found that the more I do it the easier it becomes. At first it seemed hard to take off and now I can see it becoming more natural. I live on base so most of my riding is done in short hops and slower speeds. If you do that for a while and maybe find a parking ot where you can practice some slow speed turns and stops. Also practice the transition through some gears to get used to that flow. The course is great but that's one big thing they'll do for you so if you don't have the money you can do it on your own. They pay for our classes in the Marines so I guess I'm pretty lucky there. Bottem line, I'm scared too but it's so rewarding so I plan to let my fear force me to take it slow and practice the basics.
