Motorcycle Insurance

I am new to motorcycling and was wondering what type of insurance is needed. For liability I am thinking coverage as low as 15k/30k/10k would work fine since motorcycles are of such small mass and really don't do much damage to other vehicles or persons. So let me know what kind of insurance policy you hold and what you think I, a new young motorcyclist, should get. Thanks a lot.

p.s. I am also looking to get a new Vulcan 800A for my bike that I will be insuring.

1/2 million minimum. Medical isn't cheap and 400+ lbs of steel can do a ton of damage to a uman if travelling at any speed.

Well in real dollars how much does it cost to get a MRI? Or an X-ray? Or to have a cast put into place.

We have public free healthcare up here. And it still costs $300 for an ambulance ride.

I've heard great things about Canada's "free" healthcare system. Basically, you get what you pay for. Nothing like having to wait six months for that free MRI.

But back on topic, having more medical coverage is a good thing and unless someone is filthy rich, I don't think you'll find someone that will disagree.

10K? what is that going to cover? at least 1 million, for sure... you have no idea how rediculously expensive some things are to fix, plus if people try to sue you, you could be looking at a nice fine.....

Coverage amount is 10K, not the premium.

If you break something by hitting someone, it will probably cost a LOT more then 10k. Whiplash in Alberta has been limited to payouts of 5k in order to keep premiums down. A major accident (you hitting someone unprotected at 10+km/h) will result in broken bones, crushes organs, roadrash, and possible brain damage. Remember you could potentially slam 400" lbs of steel into someone. Imagine how much damage that would do. And how much it would cost to get that person fixed.

Like I said, if you're going to be paying for someone's healthcare, then 10k will barely even cover the potential damage you could do. You want to have a TON of money availible if you hurt someone.

It is more important to have better coverage if you actually have assets to protect. Like a house. If you basically don't own anything of major value, you don't have much to worry about, and could get by with cheaper insurance.

But I still wouldn't go as low as 10k. I think 100k is the lowest you should consider.
