Newbie questions about maintainence etc

Hi,
I am planning to get myself a motorcycle for sightseeing ride what not, trouble free is top. I'm considering a BMW but its dealerships are all far (>20 miles) away. Would the distance from the dealer be an issue as far as paying visit for maintainence? There are Japanese, Harley and Triumph dealers very close by. Would I be saving much hassle getting those? How frequent is routine maintainence?
Please advise on this and other "look out" for a new buyer/rider.
Thanks

20 miles is next door as far as i'm concerned. It shouldnt really be a factor, and its not like your going in twice a week, ask them about the maintenece schudule if yer concerned.... imo be more interested in getting the moto you want vs. having to ride (GASP) 20 miles to the dealership!
btw welcome to the forums ana!

Pick the farthest one possible...gives you a great excuse to ride. I never seem to make it point to point on my bike, and have no complaints. Its part of the fun!
Hope you find a bike you love.

Most bikes need you to go in every 5000km. I think that's about 4000 miles, give or take. So tacking an extra 20 on the end of that seems... piddly at best.

20 miles is no big deal... Especially for a BMW dealership, which are fewer and farther between.
That said, what experience do you have? Have you taken the MSF course? If you are a brand newbie, then sign up for the MSF basic riders course OR HD Riders Edge before you purchase a bike...
If you're a 're-entry' rider, someone who rode as a youth and haven't been on a bike in more than 5 years you'll want to take the course too.
Consider used not new.

I called about mine at 5pm and by 9:30 pm I had put on 400 km on the truck to go get it. When you find what you want you'll end up going to all lengthes to get to it, close or far.

Thank you all. I'm a brand new rider-to-be and have taken the MSF course. I'll train on a used bike first, then move on.
Anyway, strike the BMW--I'm too short to ride them. My height is 5'7, at least 2" short

. I like the R1200ST, I guess that's a semi-naked bike? What are the similar one out there?

I ride a Harley and the local dealership is only 1 mile from my house. There are about 4 other dealers all within 35 miles from me. Today I rode my bike about 60 miles (round trip) just to buy a chrome torque screw. It's no fun for me to ride for 4 or 5 minutes so I enjoy the fact that I have options. The only nice thing about having the dealer so close is that I can drop off my bike at 6:00 at night and it will usually be one of the first bikes ready for pick up the next day. I'm never without my scoot for too long.
Let us know what you decide.
