Go sit on a
Suzuki S40. It only weighs 352lbs dry and has a 27.6" seat height. If that one's too small (but I don't think it is) step up to the S50.

You and I are about the same dimensions. And that's the first bike I bought. It's a wonderful bike to learn on. It'll do everything that you need to, and it's forgiving of the mistakes you're going to make. Pinning the throttle in any gear won't throw you off the back or anything. And all the weight is down low so it's easy to catch if it starts to tip.
Two up (150lbs on the back + me) I've done 130km/h, but that's pinning the throttle, and because it's a 1 thumper it will shake the living heck out of you. But I say it's and always will be a totally awsome bike to learn on.
There's no such thing as a feminine bike... unless you paint it pink and tie a barbie onto the back. You're putting yourself out there where any yahoo that bumps into you could end your life. There's nothing wussy about that.

How much do you want to spend? If you want to go cheap get the Rebel, $3000 brand new and 75mpg economy. If you want to go exensive I agree with the S50 that is one sweet bike. $6500 brand new, don't know what the mpg rating is.

I agree, the S40 is pretty nice. I like the S50 in black even more. Of course, there's always the venerable Honda Shadow VLX. I've never ridden one, but they seem nice and light, and the price tag is sweet. I've heard others comment on how good of a "do it all" bike it can be.

So, what kind of riding experience do you have? Your experience level will help folks better recommend a bike that you aren't as likely to get in trouble on.
