Ok Ive got a problem where I can all of a sudden only start my bike with starter fluid and then it runs for almost exactly 2 miles and then slowly runs with less and less power till it finally stalls.

I originally thought this would be a gas related problem so I put dry gas in and then I put in more later (way too much overall) and I checked my inlinbe fuel filter which is clear and obviously gas is running though. I also am pretty sure the carburator is functioning because it runs the starter fluid though.

The other thought that my friend suggested is the pick up coil, which I can test I guess but I dont even really know what it does really.

Any how I havent actually looked at the bike since I got it home, just hoping you all had some good insight.



PS after my bike broke I had to ride on the back of my friends cbr600F4i for and hour and get my truck. oooooooooo boy I never thought I would dislike motorcycles so much as I did after that ride :?

why do u have to put in starter fluid? or do you mean you prime the carbs?

it ought to start by itself w/ just the gas in the tank.

u could be having an issue w/ the petcock or if its a vac operated petcock then its probably a tank cap vent blocked.

......or ur running out of gas

it wont start without the starting fluid it just turns over. there is plenty of gas to run. I could possibly be the petcock. Thanks but I still have not had 5 minutes even to look at it yet.

next time it dies on you pop the gas cap open and see if it runs.

I would get rid of the fuel filter, just run a line straight to the carb. Fuel filters will not stop rust. could be a badly vented gas cap, as suggested by the other members. Also a vaccum petcock with a bad diaphram could be the problem. These things wear out over time. Or it could be a simple as a vaccum line that has been pulled off or split on the side, the splits are hard to see. especially if the line is black rubber. FYI too much starting fuild can BLOW you head off the bike.

I was having the same problem with mine Nighthawk. I've got the tank off right now being coated on the inside. What I found was it would run good for a day.

Let it sit over night it would start, stare for gas and then die. I took th etank to a guy I know and he said the tank had previously been DIY coate and was starting to rust.

Might want to check the inside of the tank.

It does kinda sound like it's running the two miles on the gas in the carb bowls, and they aren't refilling quick enough... petcock / floats would be my guess
