Hmm... guns in a modern society don't really fit well but then again if the government tries to start oppressing people then well... maybe the armed forces will fight to protect the government and the people will lose. Then again I seriously doubt our nation will have an oppressive govt like you see in the movies or read about in books. I'm on the fence with guns.
As for me my swords are NOT sharpened so they comply with US laws in pretty much every state and I am enrolled in a class so it's even more legal. What good is the training? Well, look at how the Philippines Special Forces combine martial arts training with modern combat. Sometimes firing a gun, such as tight quarters, isn't practical and disarming or using knives would be.

The other thing with martial arts is that you learn to control yourself and pick your moments. Makes you a better fighter over all, be it with hands, swords, guns, or the most powerful - words & thoughts.

How dare you start a discussion about guns and tell people to stay civil. 
Personally, I'm all for people having guns. I'm also for comprehensive training of said people in the safe use of said guns.

I like having guns. They make me smile when they go boom. I smile more when I hit the center of the target. Thats what I like about them.
I bought a .40 for home protection. It never left the safe except for target practice. So I figured whats the point if I am not going to have it accessible, which I just am not comfortable with now that my son is getting older and more curious. So i sold it. I still have my smith & wesson .22 pistol that I absolutely love to shoot. Cheap accurate and fun. It stays locked up too along with the .17 revolver and rifles and shotguns I have accumulated over the years for hunting.
I don't hunt anymore but I still enjoy shooting them.
So thats my perspective. Fun is fun and guns are fun!
After giving it a shot (no pun intended)a gun for home protection is just not something I feel I need personally.
And I agree with geoff, training is absolutely necessary.

The US was largely based on the gun. I'm a big believer in education on ALL subjects.
I think if we started in Kindergarten with basic gun safety & wooden guns, and moved on up to actually firing real weapons at targets by HS we'd eliminate a lot of the innocent bystander kills in so many of our crimes.
At the very least, the criminals would be more likely to hit thier targets instead of eveyone else. :/

Maybe not in NYC but where I live we deal with rattlesnakes and coyotes on a regular basis. Also bobcats, mountain lions and bears are not uncommon, especially if you keep livestock!

I say the same about my utility knife which isn't very big to begin with but still sharp as hell. KA-Bar! (yes they have 'em in different sizes so I'm not a nutter).
I like guns, but I also hate killing unless it's totally necessary. I like firing ranges and I like the different types of guns used in major wars and thankfully The History channel satisfies that.
Though I'm on the fence whether or not our gov't can have the potential to be totalitarian which gives a need for armed citizens....
