I bought a 1983 Suzuki GR650X Tempter last month. The bike runs great, but the tachometer has suddenly stopped working. I found that the cable which runs from the engine to the tachometer had come loose, and reattached it, but it had no effect.
The backlight works, and so does the fuel gauge (which is located inside the same section of the dashboard as the tach). But the needle does not move from zero, regardless of how high I rev the engine. I pored over the manual for an hour, and discovered that the problem is exceedingly well documented (NOT).
Any ideas for troubleshooting this?

Which end came loose, at the engine or at the tach? And is the inner cable (the part that turns) still in there.
Most likely it came loose at the engine and your inner cable fell out, lost somewhere on the road. It should look like a bass guitar string, but kinda square. They're around $15.00 at bike bandit.

People say I'm stupid and apathetic. I don't know what that means, and I don't care.

That would do it
The cable came loose from the engine end. Your solution actually hadn't occurred to me. I had assumed the tach was electrically connected to the engine, not mechanically as you suggest. I'll check it out; thanks.

You need to post some pictures of your bike. I love twins. Look here to see my '79 KZ 750 B.
