I'm looking into Buying an 1982 Yamaha Maxim 400. From what I hear they are very nice bikes and are good for beginners. I found one that has the motor pulled apart, because the guy wanted to put rings and new gaskets in it. He just doesn't want to finish the project!

1982 Yamaha Maxim 400 $350 (Part Included)
-4,300 Miles
-Tires are New (400 Miles on Both)
-Title Clear

He's a Mechanic! He said he'd be willing to help fix it. I think it might be a good deal! He's negotiable on price as well. There aren't many people who want to buy a bike with the motor apart! Should I consider buying this?

I owned a Yammy Maxim 400 back in 1982. It was a sweet bike. NOw I own a much larger bike. However, I would be weary of buying a "bike in a box"....some assembly required. Unless you are a mechanic and plan to use it as a winter project, I think you can find something already running. You might have to pay a bitmore, but a running bike is much better than a motor in pieces. Now you mentioned the guy in a mechanci and will repair it. My recommendation is that you not commit to buy it, just tell the guy "call me when it is running and I will look at it". If this person wants to sell the bike, he should know that it won't sell while its in pieces. That's just my two cents worth. I hope you find the right bike.
