Scooters for a newbie

OK... I'm brand new to this motorcycling thing... I'm turning 17 on Tuesday, and I'll be getting my CBT, followed by a scooter as a gift from the parents.

Now... I'm assuming you guys are experts on the subject, so I was wondering if you could tell me what particular model is good for someone just starting out? Conditions; it has to be about 125cc. No more, not too much less.

I was thinking of trying the Yamaha Vity... But then there's also the Yamaha X-Max 125. What else is worth a look?

Of the two you mentioned, I'd definitely go with the X-max 125, just on the basis of looks. Also, the X-max is liquid-cooled, the Vity is air-cooled. I would also look at the Honda S-WING. It's about 120 pounds cheaper than the X-max, but seems competitive in specification. Piaggio also makes a XEvo 125 that's even less expensive and cool-looking, but I don't know anything about reliability. Most Hondas are as reliable as a rock.

We get a lot of cheap scooters from the People's Republic of China here in the USA, and I'm guessing you do in the UK too. My advice is steer clear of them, they are a false economy.

OK... I went to sort out my CBT today, and it turns out I can probably get a learner motorbike instead of a scooter, which I would much prefer. While I'm still considering scooters, I'm deeply considering a 125cc motorbike instead... So what's out there that's worth a look?

EDIT: It'd be nice if it could hold a top-box. I'll be using it to get to and from college, so it'll need decent storage space.

What is the definition of a learner motorcycle. I bought the CBR125 it is a motorcycle. but a 125cc. So are the other two bikes in the link I posted. The avatar I have is a picture of my CBR 125.

A learner motorcycle would be any 125cc motorcycle that isn't a scooter.

Here look at the write up off the Total Motorcycle main site. It'll have bigger pictures so you can get a better look. Some of the color schemes differ depending on the country from what I have been able to find on a google image search.
