I am looking at buying a 2005 Kawasaki ex500 this weekend. I was wondering if it would have any problems making a 6 hour ride after the first 1000 mile break in. My Dad owns a Gold Wing and wants me to take a road trip with him after I buy my bike. I was wondering if this would be hard on a 500? I would also like to know the horsepower rating for this bike. Any information on the bike will help me. Thank you.

go for it, the break in period for the engine usually lasts 600 miles, after the first service (usually just changing the oil) it's all about the same, whether you ride a long ways or a little ways.

It dam well better.
Fresh oil before starting out can't hurt, but there's very little difference in putting 500 miles on it in a day or a month to the bike. Unless you never plan to put those 500 miles on the bike, there's no reason not to go.

Ninja 500 has about 50 HP at rear wheel. This list of GS500 test data over the years shows the EX/Ninja 500 test results where GS data came from comparo tests between the two. Includes a couple tests on the 2005 models.

Are there any down sides to the bike? The only complaint that I have found is that not everyone likes the style of it. Since I am more concerned with performance, I m not too worried about it. I've read that if you want style, pick up the gs500.

I sat on both a Ninja 500 and a GS500f. If you dont mind the looks of the ninja, the ninja felt alot more natural and upright. If your over 6 feet, think about a SV650, though it is about $1500 more. The SV is a bit more of a bike, but not so much that a beginner shouldnt get it.

I bought the bike and am loving it. The only down side is the break ing process. It sucks shifting at 4,000rpm, but I will make due. It will be over soon. Then I won't be so far behind the pack when they do 60.
