When i bought my bike, the guy i got it from gave me a can of chain wax that he had been using. the can says chain and cable lube and its o-ring chain safe. So when doing maintenance on my chain, does that mean i use this in addition to the 80w or 90w oil my M-O-M suggests or just the chain wax only to clean AND lube the chain? And forgive me, in advance, for asking such a basic stupid question.

your chain wax is your lube. you can use it or the oil.
to clean my chain i usually use kerosine in a spray bottle and a grunge brush (get at a motorcycle shop). if i'm in a hurry i might use wd-40 to clean the chain. keep in mind there is controversy on wd-40 so do your research before you decided if you want to use it on your chain. to lube it i use this stuff

thanks for the help dean. This guy got his wax from cyclemax in wilson and theres at least half a can left so i should be set for a while. im guessing the trip last week thru new bern went well. Maybe one day ill be able to ride with you guys, if you dont mind dragging along a n00b on a 250cc nighthawk...lol

I use chainwax on my bike, I find that it does not collect the road grime as bad as other lubes.
My recommendation is, be sure when you spray it on, to use a cloth behind the chain to catch the spray so it doesnt get on the wheel rims, as it stains. And no matter what you use it wont come out.

also, DO NOT lube or clean your chain while the bike is running. more than one person has lost a finger trying.

Maxima chain wax gold. With over 350,000 safe street miles, I've yet to find anything that works as well other than straight up gear oil and I don't have the patience for that anymore. I can't recommend it enough.

+1
I also only use the Maxima chain wax in the gold can now. No fling, no mess. I also used to use gear oil as that is what Honda recommended for my '98 VFR800FI. What a mess that was. Was always flingin' and drippin' all over that big single sided swingarm.

It's easier to lube your chain if you (1) have a centre stand, or (2) have another person help you. If you have to go route 2, then sit on the bike and roll forward as they spray your chain. It's tricky, but can be done.
Another good tip is to lube it after a ride (instead of before) as your chain will be warm and slightly stretched so the lube can get into more places more easily.
