Man killed in motorcycle crash ID'd

HELENA - A 38-year-old man killed in a motorcycle crash over the weekend was identified as Kevin Solomon of Fairfield.

Solomon died of head injuries after he lost control of his motorcycle Saturday in high winds and driving rain on Secondary Highway 279 near Silver City and struck a guardrail, County Coroner M.E. "Mickey" Nelson said. He was not wearing a helmet.

His passenger, Rochelle Hurst, 32, grabbed the handlebars and was able to ride the bike to a stop, Sheriff Cheryl Liedle said. She was treated and released from an area hospital.

Liedle said the two were participating in a charity ride from Helena to Lincoln at the time of the crash.

That's one of the things that goldwing riders are supposed to practise before goingon a long trip. If the driver passes out for some reason it's actually pretty easy to shove them forward over the gastank and reach forward to grab the handlebars. You might need to stand up a bit to do it, but it's possible and something with as much inertia as a goldwing will stay on a straight track for a long time, assuming nothing touches it. Even without cruise control.

Wonder why he wasn't wearing a helmet, maybe he would have made it. I don't play hockey without a helmet.

I've taught a person to ride this way (a girl). Reach around and modulate the hand controls while she did the gear changing and rear brake. Then put her hands under mine and do the same thing. Then let her drive with me at passenger, then, finally, solo. Took about an hour total but she learned to ride with no problems, and she didn't even know how to drive stick shift before that!
