I have an 83 maxim 400. I was goin down the interstate one day at 75 and all of a sudden it starts spitting and sputtering and back firing just died on me. Left it came back wit trailer got home put gas in it thinkn maybe i was low or something fired right back up and idled and ran fine in the garage. Next morning goin to work 70 mph almost exact same spot goin other way on interstate dies again does same thing backfiring and spitting and sputtering it makes it right around 8 to 10 miles before dying. It seems like it does it only when it gets warm. I have check spark and it has spark until it gets warm then nothin on one side but the otherside is still got it...Been asking around and some people say coil, some say rectifier. I dont know any help...

I would guess coil, myself. It isn't uncommon for them to fail when they get hot, return to operation when cool, and so on. Until the last time when they don't ever come back....

A bad rectifier would drain the battery. Did you have to boost it when it died?

Yes it had plenty of juice the whole time and now that u say they will finally just not work im thinkin that is what it is cause the more i tried to figure it out and ran it then all of a sudden i couldn even get it tto run anymore like before i could run it and it would idle and take it around the block then when i shut it off wouldnt run but now i cant even get it to start... I am gonna start with buying a coil and go from there.
