So I've hit somewhat of a road block. In order for me to sign up for my brc I need to have a helmet. My problem is I have a very, very small head. Most likely I'm guessing I need a kids size. Does this mean I would have to order online? I really don't want to do that if I can avoid it since I'm not sure of what's going to fit me. Have any of you encountered this before?

Howdy and welcome to the forums. Just go to some place that advertises that they have hundreds of helmets. All the big motorcycle accessory shops have them. Good luck.

The best fit depends on brand, and the only way to know for sure is to try it on before buying. That means going to bike shops and trying on different helmets until I find one that fits both the size and shape of my melon. The wrong shape will make a lid feel like a torture device, so I would never buy a helmet online unless I had tried it on in person beforehand. And even then, I would probably buy it from the store I tried it on at rather than online. If you don't support the local shops, one day they will be gone and then the only way to buy a helmet would be crapshooting online, buying and returning lids until you find one you can live with. Is the few bucks you save worth that?

Check out a local dealer, they should be able to fit you to a helmet.

I have a horrible time finding the right size... I've got a small head too. I previously had an Arai XS. But my current helmet is a Scorpion. I strongly urge new riders to make their first helmet purchase in person. You've got to try on the helmet you're going to buy. It takes too much time to make things right if you don't order the proper size online.

Check out the "helmet fit guidelines" sticky. Print it out and take it with you to try on lids. IF you find the right fit, BUY THE HELMET right there. It is possible that the same size ordered online won't fit exactly the same. It happens.

I actually had gone in to a local shop to try on helmets but the xxs's were just a tad too large so I'm pretty sure I will need to get a kids size. By any chance is there anyone familiar with a shop in MD that carries kids sizes?

If you'd filled in your profile, I would have offered more specific help... I live in MD and am an instructor as well. Bobs BMW has a good selection of helmets in all sizes and they'll help you get the right fit. They're a bit pricey-er but you'll walk out knowing that you bought the right helmet.

Pete's Cycle (there are 3 shops, all operated separately - 3 brothers, dad gave them each a location) - have good helmet selections, but don't provide help other than, "the helmets are over there." In Eldersburg, is C&L Cycle they cater to motocross, and as I recall have a good selection of smaller gear. Ellicott City MotorSports - the two times I was in there, I was not impressed.

Ah sorry about not filling in my profile. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll definitely check them out. I've just been finding it a bit difficult to get info on small helmets for some reason and I don't really know anybody who rides. One of these days I'll find one so I can take my brc
