Newbie

#1 Unread post by frankie »

I've just reached 500 miles on my VStar 250. I absolutely love the bike, but find my right hand gets numb and tingly after riding for a while. My chiropractor says it's overworked muscles in the arm, she's treating another biker that competes, with success.

Has anyone else had these issues and what have you done to make it better?I really want to take more than 30 mile rides!

Thanks for your help.

Hi frankie, :welcome: to TMW!

Sorry to hear about your hand. I don't experience the same but I have had troubles with my right arm due to being hit by a car when walking...(long story)

I highly recommend you see a Physio/Physical Therapist rather than just your chiropractor. They'll give you a few sessions and some stretches to work on. The results can be nothing short of amazing!

Andrea :)

Thanks Andrea!

I appreciate the advice! I have one more session with chiropractor. If it doesn't work, I will look into the p/t.ow long have you been riding?

Pam are you sure its muscles? If it is you will need the PT and exercises. Do you have trouble holding something tightly for a period of time otherwise? If so don't rule out a carpal tunnel problem.

The thing to do to check is to hold your hands together so that your open hand to arm makes as close to a right angle as possible. Hold them together like that GENTLY for up to a minute, no longer. If you get the same tingle within that time it may well be carpal tunnel problems happening. Please see a Dr. to have tests then.

Thanks Pete. The chiropractor told me to do the same thing, holding the palms of my hands together at right angles. She said a person with carpel tunnel can't do that for even a couple of seconds without pain. I don't have that issue.

I will go for one more session today so she can loosen the muscles in the upper arm. If that doesn't work, I will see a dr. She helped me once before and it lasted 3 years. I just let it go too long this time.

I definitely don't want to give up riding because of it.
Thank you for your help.
Pam

I've been riding for 7 years, and have just re-purchased a bike a week ago. I was without one for a year and a half, but I did get out and ride my hubby's bike once and a while.

Best of luck with the hand/arm problem! Keep us posted. :D

Another possibility is that you are gripping the throttle too tight.

Yea...I know I do that. I started with a 07 Yahama Vino 125 scooter. It was a no-brainer...got my motorcycle endorsement with it. Decided to trade up and learn to shift. I know I have been tense learning and feel mush more at ease the more I ride. I've had other issues with my hand and arm over the years. It's just worse this year and I think most of it is because of the bike. I will beat this...I would rather ride my bike than just about anything else!

This is a fun place to visit. I appreciate the advice from you all. Looking forward to visiting more.
