Howdy, Yall! Customs Crossings: Need Help!

Hi! This is an excellent group here. I came across it reading reviews on the home pages, which were very helpful. I’ve been riding my father’s (yes…) 1966 Ducati Mk3 around for a few years. But because I no longer have a garage to store it, back to the parents house it goes, and I’ve been seeking a bike of my own, until it’s willed to me  . I purchased a 1980 CX500C for my girlfriend, but I fell in love with Suzuki’s SV650S. I’m looking at buying one in Montreal, Canada. It should be a fun ride out there, but I’m unsure of customs x-ing. Can anyone give information on purchasing a bike “here” (eBay), and going through customs with it? Another bonus: :frusty: it has a Missouri salvage title, but is completely repaired, mostly. Anyone know about Milwaukee, WI registration? Can this bike be inspected and changed to a “clear” title?
Thanks very much!
Chris

Thanks for the welcome, Wizzard- I know, there was a lot of questions, most are pretty specific, too. I'm just not getting anywhere online or over the phone with my DMV.
Thanks.

Welcome!

I seem to remember there was a Canuck here who bought a bike state-side and took it into Canada...Maybe he'll speak up?

Anyway, welcome, and good luck!

Hi and Thanks! I'm just getting really antsy about all this- it's my nature, unfortunately. It will be the first bike I can call my own, and I’ve wanted to do that for the past 10 years or so (I’m 26). I’ve just read so many reviews of how fantastic the SV650(s) is, and right now, it’s a better alternative than my prior dream machine, Ducati’s 900M, in MANY ways.

I just wrote this reply to some answers I got in Canada’s local forum, from the same questions I asked here:

The seller just wrote back to me, saying he would deliver to me personally from Montreal to Milwaukee, WI (53208), for 350$.

It would be a 2 100 mile round trip for me, with and estimated 150-180$ in gas, plus the toll, and toll$, of going through Chicago, customs, back through customs, and Chicago again.
Anyone think it would be less of a headache to let him deliver, than go through all this to have saved around 100 dollars? The adventure of a road trip doesn’t seem worth all these uncertainties with customs…
I would think it might be easier for him to go through the border with the bike, too.

I’ve only gone through customs at airports, and my knowledge of the Canadian border exists only from TV shows  .

Thanks for all your post- they’ve helped quite a bit! (I’m leaning towards him delivering now…)

I would hope you're getting a helladeal on this bike to go through that trouble. I'd personally find something closer to home...

I have a friend sellin his SV650 here in Regina, SK but then you'd be in a similar situation....

Good luck finding a ride to call your own :righton:

Yeah, hopefully it will be a good deal. I have a few hours left in the auction to see what it comes down too. I just noticed there are some other good bikes (2003+ SV650S) being posted on eBay, damaged of course- the only ones I can offord right now...
Thanks for the luck and info-

Hi Cris

Welcome to the forum. Hope you have good luck with your purchase. By the way I know a couple of guys with the SV650, they handle pretty good and really sound like a Ducati from behind.

Hey, thanks Honda599 <that's a really cool bike you've got there.

That's a great page you've set up, also! I 'lived' out in Portland for 4 months with my sister several years ago, and I rode her BMW R75/5 around quite a bit (she's back in town now, Milw.WI). Those were the best areas I've traveled on a bike. A trip out to Sandy Island was a favorite. A good friend lives in Seattle now- perhaps a visit is due soon, pending the arrival of a bike, of course.

Thanks!
Chris
PS- It's great to see biking photos of the Old Scenic Highway! Forgot about that trip! Coffie house at the top, right? Those brought back some memories! Thanks again!

Welcome aboard! I can't really help you with your specific questions. I'd go directly to the DMV and talk with a live in-person person to find out about the title business. If you end up going to Montreal yourself, you don't have to go through Chicago - just go north bound, and head east through the UP of Michigan, and then onto Montreal. It'll be easier (and I think closer too) than going around the lower lakes. Good luck, and enjoy the forums.

Cheers,
Loonette
