I'm not for sure on that particular bike, but often times you have to remove the gas tank to get to the plugs. And a lot of times (Suzuki 1500 for an example) you have to remove covers off of the top part of the jug to even see where the plug wires go to.
Judging by pictures of the engine on your bike there are covers you can pull with two bolts. on the left and right sides to get to.

Heh, that's not bad. On the V-strom 1000 you have to remove (at least partway) the radiator to get at the plug for the front cylinder.

Haha yeah it's not too bad.
If someone ever asks you to change plugs on a Kawasaki Brute Force 750 quad, either tell them it'll be 300 dollars plus plugs or to fugg off...
Remove almost all front plastics, use about 6 different extensions/universal joints per plug, figure out how to get them out, then how to get the new ones in without floor-gapping them, it's a fun one.

The Wal Mart Super Tech Oil Filter for your Yamaha 1300 V Star is Super Tech # ST7317 and its only $3.99, and the filter is made by Champion Labs, its the same oil filter as the Mobil 1.
My local Yamaha dealers want $22.95 for a OEM Yamaha Oil Filter.
S plugs in your Yamaha are designed to last almost forever, I have the factory plugs in my FZ6 going on 9000 miles and no problems
