Smokin.....

Well as I have been waiting to take my MSF course, I have spent my nights taking the bike out, when there is no traffic on the road, getting used to my new ride. Well it's been fun, exciting, and I can't wait to see how much I will learn at the course. Well... I dropped her. I knew it may happen at some point within my first year. The bike fell on it's left side, and received a scratch on it's front fender, and clutch, but I noticed some light smoke coming from the engine. Smells like, oil. I got her back home, let her settle down, and went to start it up, and it struggled to start. After about 10 minutes of riding around the block, I parked at home and noticed the smoke continuing. Is this normal for a dropped bike? Will it burn off? I plan to have a dealer look at it, but whats everyone elses opinion?

I'm no bike guy expert at all but I doubt your bike blowing white smoke that smells like oil is a good thing in any situation. What yr/make/model bike is this. What gasket/lines are on the left side that could have been smashed. can you take some pictures and post them? Again not a bike guy but i did a turbo rebuild on my talon way back and a gasket died when i put the oiul return line back on... this cause the thing to spit oil out when under pressure...this oil (again remembering its a turbo of the exhuast mani) had a habit of spraying on the exhuast pipe... this made for PLENTY of white smoke that smelled like oil. Take some pictures in the general vicinty of the area and see what pipe could have been broken or seal came loose

Actually it's not a white smoke, but a very light smoke. Kind of like a misting that I can see coming in front of the headlight, that seems to originate from between the V-Twin. It's a new bike (Yamaha V-Star), still under it's first 600 miles. For all I know it could be part of the break in, I just didn't notice it before.

AGain not to claim myself as a bike expert.... but I do not think that any vehicles break in involves smoke. Could something have jammed into a pipe or casing over between the vtwin? Have you tried taking the body paneling off and cleaning it up and starting it,revving it and just staring at where the smoke comes from?

humm, that not a part of braking in. I for one don't have that kind of smoke. You better check
http://forums.delphiforums.com/sgmfa/start , and ask the same question overthere. This is the place where all V-Star 650cc hang out.
For my first recomendation, you should wash the bike to get rid of any oil/gas residue leak when you droped the bike. Try to find the source where smoke come form. If smoke still there then you might have to have dealer check on it.

Appreciate it. Visited the site, and found someone with the same bike, who was having the same issue with his new 1100. Waiting to hear back from him.

Hi,
I was having the same issue on my 400 twin, especially after I took off the exhaust headpipes. Turns ouot I had not torqued the exhaust headpipes to the right setting and the fumes were leaking past the exhaust headpipe gasket. In my case I had to put in new gaskets and torque down the bolts right.
I would assume that on a new bike, you should occasionally go and get the once over from the service guys especially if it is under warranty. My guess is that those bolts need a once over. also check to see is gas/oil is not leaking/spilled on the engine cooling fins. especially spilled oil can creep into the fins and stay there for quite a while until it all gets burned off by the heat.

you need to see where the smoke is coming from, and what it smells like. i had a leaky exhaust pipe and smoke would leak out right where the exhaust bolts to the motor. rev the engine and look around there to see if you see some exhaust puffing out. you might have jar'd it enough to creat a gap to let the exhaust out.
